Barrett (Greenhills & Ballintava)

Estate(s)

Name Description
Barrett (Greenhills & Ballintava) At the time of Griffith's Valuation, John Samuel Barrett was leasing the Greenhills estate in the parish of Ballymacward from John H. Blakeney and he held the townland of Ballintava, parish of Dunmore in fee. Flynn states that the Greenhills holding had previously been in the hands of the Green family from about the mid 18th century but that the lease was sold to Barrett in 1819. In the 1870s John S. Barrett owned 2,563 acres in county Galway. The 1885 edition of Walfords indicates that he died in 1880 and his estate inherited by his son Samuel. In 1906 the Ballintava estate included over 400 acres of untenanted demesne lands.
