Higgins (Benown Castle)

The Dictionary of Irish Biography records Matthew James Higgins as the only son of Matthew Higgins of Benown Castle, Co. Westmeath, and his wife Janette, daughter of James Baillie of Dochfour, Inverness-shire, Scotland. He was born in 1810 and became a journalist. He reported on The Famine in county Mayo in 1847.
