Hope (Westmeath)

The surname Hope is associated in Medieval times with Hopestown, Ballinea, just to the west of Mullingar in county Westmeath. Randal Adams was granted large tracts of land in the county in September 1666 which were forfeited by Richard Hope and sold onto Major John Lyons of Ladestown in 1715. A branch of the Hope family continued to hold some land in county Westmeath, living at Clondalever, parish of Kilpatrick and Streamstown and Gartlandstown, parish of Faughalstown.
