Coffey/Coffy (Westmeath)

In county Westmeath the name Coffey is associated with an old bardic family. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation Edward Coffey held the 558 acre townland of Clonkeen in the parish of Noughaval from William H Magan; William Coffey held the 666 acre townland of Croughal, parish of Churchtown also from William H Magan while Richard Coffey held the 508 acre townland of Newcastle, parish of Clonfad, from Charles B Marlay. In the mid-1870s Richard Coffey of Newcastle, Tyrellspass, owned 508 acres in county Westmeath and 457 acres in King’s County (Offaly), while William Coffey of Lower Dominick Street, Dublin, owned 666 acres in county Westmeath.
