Somers (Tyrrellspass)
At the end of the 18th century Richard Summers/Somers, weaver, linen merchant and land agent of Tyrrellspass, county Westmeath married Sarah Anne Fouace. They had two sons. The eldest, John Richard Somers of Tyrrellspass House, married Maria Jane Handy of Bracca Castle, county Westmeath. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) he held land in the parish of Clonfad from the Bishop of Meath and George A Boyd. He also held land in the parishes of Ardnurcher, Clonlost and Moylisher. The second son, Thomas Somers of Tyrrellspass, had a son Richard (died 1890, aged 61) who bought Streamstown House in 1855. In the mid-1870s John Richard Somers owned 1,736 acres in the county while Richard Somers of Streamstown owned 755 acres. 1876, 86; H de B, 421.
