Hamilton (Hamwood)
The Hamilton family was resident at Hamwood, Dunboyne, county Meath, from at least the beginning of the 19th century. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) Charles William Hamilton (1802-1880) held land in the county Westmeath parishes of Killare and Kilcumrereagh. Lands belonging to the Hamiltons in counties Meath, Kildare and Westmeath were advertised for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court in March 1855, including Hamwood. The list of landowners of one acre and more (1876) records Charles William Hamilton as the owner of 1,031 acres in county Westmeath while Hussey de Burgh (1878) records him owning 2,421 acres in county Westmeath and 321 acres in county Meath. Some of his county Westmeath land was held from the Bishop of Meath.
