Dargan (Mosstown)
At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) William Dargan (1799-1867), engineer, builder and farmer from county Carlow, held lands in the county Westmeath parishes of Killare and Ballyloughloe. He was the railway contractor for the Mullingar to Athlone railway line (O’Brien 152). He is also associated with Moyvoughly in the parish of Ballymore where he experimented in flax growing. He is associated with the Dublin Exhibition of 1853 which promoted Irish industry and art and was attended by Queen Victoria.
