Murphy (Ballinacloon)

In the 1870s Patrick Edward Murphy of Ballinacloon/Ballynaclonagh, Multifarnham, was one of the largest landowners in county Westmeath. His estate amounted to 9,693 acres in the parishes of Kilkenny West, Noughaval, Multifarnham, Stonehall, Street, Taghmon, Tyfarnham, Mullingar and St Mary’s. He was recorded as a magistrate in the county in the 1830s. He was also the owner of over 700 acres in County Longford. He granted an abatement to his tenants in October 1879 as recorded in the Kerry Sentinel (28 October 1879). He died on 9 November 1883 (London Gazette, 21 December 1883). His London address at the time of his death was 21 Sussex Square, Hyde Park and his Irish effects amounted to £17,614. In 1882, his eldest son Major Edward Murphy, 5th Dragoon Guards married Lily-Lydston, daughter opf Sir Ludston Newman of Mamhead, Devon. The Murphy home, Ballinacloon, was demolished in 1939.
