Maconchy [Machonchy] (Longford)

Burke writes that the Maconchy family of county Longford descend from George Maconchy, of Scottish descent, who purchased the manors of Eden and Rathmore in County Longford and died c.1779. He was succeeded by his nephew, also George Maconchy of Rathmore. Devaney indicates that this George was a member of the Grand Jury for County Longford in the 1780s. In the 1870s George Maconchy, with an address in Torquay, England, was recorded as the owner of over 10,000 acres in County Longford while John Maconchy, of Bryanstown House, Maynooth, County Kildare, held over 700 acres in the county. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s, John [Maconcky] was among the principal lessors in the parish of Killoe, and also held lands in the parish of Columbkille, both in the barony of Granard. They appear to have had a house at Rathmore, parish of Columbkille. There was no house with a significant valuation in this townland, which was owned by John [McConkey] at the time of Griffiths Valuation.
