Thompson (Clonfin)
At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the early 1850s, John Thompson was among the principal lessors in the parish of Granard and in the parish of Killoe, barony of Longford. In the 1870s, Hussey de Burgh noted John Edward Thompson of Cloonfin, Granard and Wilmonah House, Shankill, County Dublin as the owner of over 1600 acres in County Longford. Devaney notes, however, that some Thompson property in Killoe parish was purchased by John S. Ireland in the Landed Estates Court. In 1864 John Thompson offered for sale the rental of over 500 acres at Esker in the barony of Longford in the Landed Estates Court. The original grant was from the estate of Sir Arthur Forbes. In May 1871 Thompson offered for sale almost 1150 acres in the baronies of Granard and Longford in the Landed Estates Court. The sale notice recites the tenure history of the properties which also involved members of the Beatty, Bond and Forbes families. In 1882 over 300 acres in the barony of Granard as well as dwelling houses in Longford town were offered for sale in the Land Judges' Court by members of the Kenny family. This property was leased from the Thompson estate. Burke states that this Thompson family is descended from Captain William Thompson who came to Ireland during the Williamite Wars in the 1690s.
