Smyth (Ballynagall)
This was a junior branch of the Smyth family of Drumcree who inherited the Ballynagall estate following the death of James W M Berry in 1855. In 1832 the Rev Thomas Smyth married Mary Anne Gibbons, niece of James Gibbons of Ballynagall and it was their eldest son Thomas James who succeeded to Ballynagall. Captain Thomas Smyth of Ballynagall owned 9,778 acres in the mid-1870s including lands in the county Westmeath parishes of Lackan, Leny, Clonfad, Killucan. Rathconnell and Faughalstown and much smaller acreages in counties Kildare, King’s County (Offaly) and Meath.
