Temple (Waterstown)
Following the Cromwellian confiscations the lands of the Waterstown estate were granted to William Handcock, ancestor of Lord Castlemaine. They passed to one of his younger sons, Reverend Stephen Handcock, Dean of Kilmacduagh. Reverend Stephen’s son Gustavus, MP and Recorder of Athlone, married the heiress Elizabeth, daughter of Reverend Robert Temple of Ballyloughloe (Mount Temple) and built Waterstown House c 1746. In 1703, Robert Temple of Ballyloughloe bought some of the estate of King James II from the trustees of forfeited estates. Their grandson Gustavus Robert Handcock assumed the name of Temple and his granddaughter inherited the estate and married William George, 2nd Baron Harris as his second wife. Both their sons assumed the name of Temple and succeeded each other at Waterstown and their sister was married to the 4th Baron Castlemaine. The eldest son, Reginald Temple Harris Temple, is recorded in Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) as the lessor of many townlands in the parishes of Ballyloughloe, Bunowen, Kilkenny West and Noughaval. In the 1870s his estate was comprised of 4,863 acres. He died in 1900 and was succeeded by his brother Captain Arthur Ernest Temple who married Jane, widow of Arthur Chaigneau of Bunowen and had a son, Arthur Reginald Temple, born 1874.
