Chaigneau (Harmony Hall)
A Huguenot family who settled in Ireland in the late seventeenth century. In 1842, Arthur Dunn Chaoigneau purchased an estate in the parish of Bunown, county Westmeath, from Colonel John Caulfeild. He was a barrister, who had entered Gray’s Inn in May 1828 and was the son of Peter (Grays Inns Admissions, 436). He married Jane daughter of the Rev Richard Butler Bryan. There was litigation about their marriage settlement (Irish Jurist 12 (1860), 5). Arthur D Chaigneau died at Benown House/Harmony Hall in 1866. His widow married the Hon Arthur Harris Temple of Waterstown House. [Temples held land in the parish]. A Miss Chaigneau of Bunown owned 1,050 acres in county Westmeath in the 1870s.
