Upton (Coolatore)

O’Brien writes that the townland of Coolatore (733 acres) was purchased by Arthur Upton in 1825. The Uptons family were originally from Devon and a number of Arthur’s ancestors were Anglican clergymen. A John Upton was granted 539 acres in the barony of Rathconrath in 1669. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854) he is recorded as holding the land in fee. In the 1870s he was still the owner. He died in 1889 and the property was inherited by his son Henry Arthur Shuckburgh Upton. Henry and his wife Victoria were both resident in the censuses of 1901 and 1911.
