Boyd (Middleton Park)

This family descend from Reverend James Boyd, rector of Erris, County Mayo in the mid-eighteenth century. His son Abraham married (1815) as his second wife, Jane, Countess of Belvedere and had a son, George Augustus of Middleton Park, born 1817, who inherited from his mother ‘a great portion of the Rochfort estate situated in county Westmeath’ (Burke’s Landed Gentry of Ireland 1904, 519). He bought Middleton House from James W. Middleton Berry in 1848. Griffith’s Valuation records him holding lands in many parishes in County Westmeath, in particular Ballymore, Carrick, Clonfad, Rahugh and Castletownkindalen. In the 1870s his estate amounted to 16,391 acres in County Westmeath, according to Hussey de Burgh and 9,431 according to the 'Return of Owners of one acre' (1876).
