Edgeworth
Burke writes that the Edgeworth family had been in Ireland since at least the reign of Elizabeth I. Documents in the National Library associate them with Longford in 1620. Sir John Edgeworth was High Sheriff of Longford in 1646 and M.P. 1646-49. His grandson, Richard, is described as ''of Edgeworthstown". He was the father of the educationalist Richard Lovell Edgeworth and the grandfather of the novelist, Maria Edgeworth. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the early 1850s, Charles S. Edgeworth, son of Richard Lovell Edgeworth by his third marriage to Elizabeth Sneyd, was among the principal lessors in the parishes of Granard, Mostrim and Templemichael in the barony of Ardagh and Clonbroney in the baronies of Granard and Longford. In the 1870s, the Edgeworthstown estate was owned by Antonie Eroles Edgeworth, the son of Charles half-brother, Francis Beaufort Edgeworth, and amounted to 3000 acres. In November 1870 he offered some townlands in the barony of Granard for sale in the Landed Estates Court. Michael Pakenham Edgeworth, Charles’ youngest half-brother and a well -known botanist, was the owner of over 1500 acres in County Longford at the same time.
