Doherty (Straid)

In the 1870s Edward Doherty, whose address is given as Custom House, Dublin, was the owner of almost 1300 acres in County Donegal. In 1906 he was noted as the owner of untenanted property at Straid, Clonmany. The Doherty family had served as agents for the various absentee landlords who owned the estate, including Glen House. In 1863 the rental of an estate of over 750 acres, known as the lands of Clonmany, were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court by members of the Doherty family. The tenure description indicates they were held under a lease from the Lord Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, originally to William Doherty. Some of this property was offered for sale again in 1865. Michael and Rebecca Doherty offered for sale over 300 acres of the lands at Straid in the parish of Clonmany in July 1867. The house history suggests the estate was acquired by the Land Commission in the early 1920s for resale to the tenants.
