Webb (Hilltown)

William Webb was resident at Hilltown, Castlepollard, county Westmeath, circa 1837. George Webb of Hilltown held an estate of over 1,000 acres in county Cavan at the time of Griffith’s Valuation in the 1850s. This estate was situated mainly in the parish of Ballintemple but also in the parish of Ballymachugh, while William Webb held Drumcor and the local rector, Reverend Matthew Webb, held Moynagh Upper, both townlands situated in the parish of Drumlumman. George Webb’s estate in the parish of Ballintemple comprised of Ballytrust, Ballytrust Lower, Corr, Aghaweely Lower and Dillagh and amounting to 868 acres was advertised for sale in the Landed Estates Court on 18 November 1859. The original lease of this estate was dated 30 January 1767 from the Hon Arthur Dawson to Jane Webb for 3 lives with perpetual renewal. This lease was converted into a fee farm grant on 2 April 1853. George Webb died on 12 March 1872; his executor was Thomas Frederick Webb. In 1876, T.F. Webb of Hilltown held 219 acres in county Cavan. The townland of Moydristan (219 acres) in the parish of Ballymachugh held by George Webb in the 1850s and leased to William Webb, was advertised for sale in the Land Judges Court in February 1885 as the property of T.F. Webb. Thomas F. Webb died on 6 April 1892. See Wills and Administrations Wills 1872, 668 and 1902, 478.
