L'Estrange (Owendoon)

The L’Estranges of county Cavan were a branch of the L’Estranges of Moystown, King’s County. In the mid-19th century Sir George Burdett L’Estrange of Lisnamadra, county Cavan, was chamberlain to the Lord Lieutenant. His son George Henry L’Estrange was living at Kilnacrott at this time. However he built the house Owendoon in the townland of Owengalles, parish of Kilmore, in the late 1850s. In 1876 George Henry L’Estrange of Owendoon, Bawnboy, owned 344 acres in county Cavan. He died in 1870. There is a memorial to him and his wife Augusta Caroline des Voeux in St Peter’s Church, Templeport. They had a son Henry George L’Estrange who died in 1887 and a daughter Louisa Mary.
