Atkins (Lurgan)

In the mid-19th century James N. Atkins held land in the parishes of Larah, Lavey and Mullagh, county Cavan, while Henry N. Atkins held a townland in the parish of Lavey. James Newell Atkins, barrister-at-law, was the eldest son of George Newell of Cabra House, county Down, and his wife Jane Atkins, who married in 1825. James took the additional name of Atkins in compliance with the will of his maternal grand uncle Henry Atkins of Lurgan, county Armagh, in 1848. James N. Atkins died in 1855. [His brother] Henry Atkins Newell Atkins of Warrenpoint, county Down, married Jane Bennie in 1855 and was buried in the cemetery at St Patrick’s Church, Newry in 1872. They had a son also named Henry Atkins Newell Atkins, who was a student at Gray’s Inn, London, in the 1880s. In 1876, Henry A. Newell Atkins of Newry owned 870 acres in county Cavan while John Newell Atkin owned 596 acres.

Recites details of court case between McGauran, plaintiff, and Philip Sheridan, Tierlahood, county Cavan, defendant. By virtue of writ issued out of Her Majesty's High Court of Justice in Ireland, Queen's Bench, Burrowes has taken possession of unexpired interest of Sheridan in property described as 12 acres, 1 rood and 7 perches statute measure part of the town and lands of Tirlahode (Tierlahood), barony of Tullygarvey, county Cavan. Held by Sheridan from Henry Atkins Newell Atkins, esquire, at annual rent of £6.13.0.
