Hort

This family descend from the Most Reverend Josiah Hort, Archbishop of Tuam 1742-1751. The Archbishop’s son was created a baronet in 1767. The Horts were closely related to the Caldwells of Castle Caldwell, county Fermanagh. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation Sir Josiah William Hort held an estate in the county Cavan parish of Annagh, barony of Lower Loughtee. On 9 June 1863, his estates in Cavan amounting to 1,583 acres and in county Fermanagh amounting to 2,871 acres were for sale in the Land Court. In 1876, his estate in county Cavan amounted to 973 acres and he owned further estates in counties Fermanagh (285 acres), Kildare (1847 acres) and Queen’s County (Laois, 851 acres). He died in August 1876 and was succeeded by his brother Sir John Josiah Hort, 3rd Baronet, who had homes in Dublin and Kilcock, county Kildare.
