Hamilton (Castle Hamilton)

Castle Hamilton was the seat of members of the Southwell family in the first half of the 19th century. The Hamiltons of Castle Hamilton, county Cavan were a junior branch of the Hamiltons of Ballyfatton, county Tyrone. Galbraith Hamilton of Dublin was the sixth son of Archibald Hamilton of Ballyfatton. His grandson was James Hamilton of Castle Hamilton, who purchased the estate from the Southwells in the mid-1840s. The Hamilton estate was located in the parishes of Killashandra, Kilmore and Kildallan and in 1876 amounted to 1,649 acres. The house was accidentally burnt in 1911. In 1904, Robert Claude Hamilton, third son of James Hamilton who died in 1895, was living at Drummany, parish of Killashandra.
