Hinds (Lake View House)
Members of this family were associated with Corrakane, near Bellananagh, county Cavan in the 18th century. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (1856) Captain R.J. Hinds owned one townland in the parish of Killashandra while Richard John Hinds owned two townlands in the parish of Drumlane. In 1876, Captain R.J. Hinds of Newgrove, Granard, county Longford, owned 89 acres in county Cavan and Richard John Hinds of Deramfield (Lake View House) owned 320 acres. The captain may have been the son of R.J. Hinds. The Anglo Celt, 11 October 1855, records that on 25 October 1855 Richard John Hinds was the petitioner for the sale of the lands of Killatowney or Killytawny, 137 acres on the outskirts of Killashandra, belonging to members of the Fitzpatrick family. He appears to have purchased these lands as Killatowney, with the lands Deramfield and Rinn, which were offered for sale by his son also named Richard John Hinds in 1864 (12 May and 7 July). Griffith’s Valuation also records the representatives of Charlotte Hinds holding the townland of Ned in the parish of Killashandra. Charlotte Hinds was brutally murdered in October 1855. The newspapers state that she had bought the encumbered estate of ‘Tubberlion’, [Toberlyan, parish of Templeport] and this agrarian crime was due to demands for rent. She was resident at Carne House at the time of her death. Griffith’s Valuation records Moses Netterfield as the immediate lessor of Toberlyan and the occupier of Carn House. The Reverend George Hinds of Newgrove, county Longford, also held a townland in county Cavan in the 1850s.
