Fox (Foxhall)

Richard E, Fox, of Foxhall, was the owner of over 3000 acres in County Longford in the 1870s. Richard M. Fox owned extensive property in the parish of Rathreagh, barony of Ardagh, County Longford at the time of Griffiths Valuation in the early 1850s. In 1856, Michael Maxwell Fox had offered his property in County Longford for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court. Burke suggests that this is an ancient Irish family. Richard Edward was succeeded by his daughter, Adeline Mary, in 1885. The Fox family, who held land in county Cavan, were a junior branch of the Fox family of Fox Hall, county Longford. Richard Fox (1795-1864) was the fifth son of Richard Fox of Fox Hall and his wife Lady Anne Maxwell, daughter of Barry, Earl of Farnham. In the mid-19th century Richard Fox held land in the parishes of Mullagh, Lurgan, Castlerahan, Kildallan, Crosserlough and Drumlane. In 1878, his second son Charles de Bassyn Fox with addresses in Dublin, Castleblayney, county Monaghan and Cregg, county Sligo, owned 2,246 acres in the county.
