Gumley

The Gumley family were located in the Belturbet locality of county Cavan. A number of family members were Church of Ireland clergymen. Three John Gumleys are buried in Belturbet COI cemetery including John Gumley of Sugarloaf, who died in 1794, aged 80. John Gumley, son of the Reverend John Gumley, rector of Bailieborough (died 1837), married Mary Sadlier and had five sons the Reverend John Stewart, Thomas, William, Robert and Charles (see Cavan Observer, 31 January 1863). At the time of Griffith’s Valuation (1856), John Gumley held land in the parishes of Templeport, Castleterra, Moybolgue, Shercock, Enniskeen, Drumlane and Annagh. Over 500 acres of the lands of Upper and Lower Blackhills, parish of Moybologue, held by Thomas and John Gumley from the Bishop of Kilmore were advertised for sale on 13 June 1862 in the Landed Estates Court. By 1876, only two small acreages in county Cavan were recorded for the Reverends John and Robert Gumley.
