Thornton (Greenville)

At the time of the Restoration James Thornton was confirmed in the possession of an estate in county Cavan which he had purchased. When he died he left this estate to his second son, Isaac. In 1728, Isaac’s son, James Thornton, married Martha Burrowes of Stradone House, county Cavan. Their son, Perrott Thornton, married Elizabeth Mee in 1778. In 1810, their eldest son, Perrott Mee Thornton, married Ellen, daughter of Gore Cochrane of Dromard and by the early 1860s this couple’s second son, William Robert Thornton, had succeeded to the property. In the mid-19th century Perrott M. Thornton held an estate mainly in the parish of Kildallan, barony of Tullyhunco, but also in the parish of Templeport, barony of Tullyhaw, county Cavan. In November 1854, the 833 acre estate of Perrott Mee Thornton, in the parish of Abbeylara, barony of Granard, county Longford, was offered for sale in the Encumbered Estates Court. It was held under a lease dated 1754 from George Boyd to James Thornton. The Greenville estate of 1,442 acres, in the baronies of Tullyhunco and Tullyhaw, belonging to William Robert Thornton, of Brisbane, Australia, Collector of Customs, was advertised for sale on 17 December 1863 in the Landed Estates Court.
