Irwin (Carnagh)

The Irwins of Carnagh, county Armagh and Greenmount, county Monaghan, descend from the Irwins of Bonshaw in Scotland. In 1680, William Irwin was granted an estate at Carnagh, just over the border between counties Monaghan and Armagh. His great grandson Arthur Irwin was a JP and resided at Greenmount in the late 18th century. He married Alicia daughter of Daniel Kelly of Castle Dawson, Armagh. The twenty third President of the USA, Benjamin Harrison 1889-1893, was descended from this couple. Their grandson Colonel De La Cherois Thomas Irwin, born at Carnagh in 1843, immigrated to Canada in 1861. He was granted a coat of arms by the Genealogical Office in Dublin in 1907. Very small acreages were held by members of the Irwin family in 1876, however William Arthur Irwin JP of Carnagh House, owned 1,516 acres in county Armagh.
