Steele (Donaghmoyne)
Shirley writes that Norman Steele was agent to the Marquess of Bath and Evelyn Shirley ‘and his skill in agriculture and the courage and determination which he evinced in suppressing the Rebellion, in 1798, are still deservedly remembered in his honour.’ Norman Steele of Monalty died in 1802 aged 48. He was married to Harriet, daughter of the Reverend Oliver Cary of Munfin, county Wexford. In the mid-19th century members of the Steele family held land in the parish of Donaghmoyne, barony of Farney. In 1855, the rental of Dromneill and Carrickavoley, parish of Donaghmoyne with two houses in Castleblayney, the estate of James Steele, were offered for sale. Three years later these two townlands, leased from the Archbishop of Armagh by the Battys, were offered for sale again. In 1876, John Steele and Miss Hannah Steele, both of Derrycreevy, Castleblayney, owned 100 and 132 acres respectively.
