Lee/Ley (Leesborough)

In 1668, Ensign William Ley was granted 610 acres in the barony of Dartree including Drumhay, Correvan and Doohat, all townlands that border Mullaghmore, the townland in which Annaghmakerrig is located. High Sheriffs of county Monaghan include William Lee 1710, William Ley of Leysborough 1762 and William Ley 1804. Shirley records the marriage of Frances, youngest daughter of Sir James Hamilton of Cornacassa, with Colonel [Richard] Lee. The genealogy of the Lucas family of Castle Shane records two marriages with members of the Lee family. The Lee family apparently sold their estate at Mullaghmore to John Moorhead MD in 1802, see Annaghmakerrig Papers in PRONI D3585. In the 1830s the Ordnance Survey Field Name Book refers to Mullaghmore as the property of Mr Francis Lee on a lease in perpetuity to Moorhead. Family members may have remained in the locality as administration of the will of John Lee of Gortgranard, farmer, was granted in 1910.
