Bolton (Donaghmoyne)

Burke records the descent of this family from Sir Richard Bolton, Lord Chancellor of Ireland. The family had acquired lands in counties Meath and Louth by the end of the 17th century. In Griffith’s Valuation Richard Bolton, born 1811, held a townland in the parish of Inishkeen, barony of Farney. He purchased some land in the parish of Donaghmoyne from Reverend Robert Loftus Tottenham in 1861 and is recorded of Donaghmoyne, Carrickmacross, county Monaghan in 1863 when he became a Commissioner of the Peace (Cork Examiner, 6 June 1863). Griffith’s Valuation records the Reverend R.L. Tottenham as the lessee of Donaghmoyne. In 1876, the representatives of Richard Bolton of Castlering, county Louth, owned 1,135 acres in county Monaghan.
