Upton (Castle Upton)
In 1723 the Uptons purchased part of the Blayney estate in the northern part of the parish of Muckno, barony of Cremorne, county Monaghan. The family was resident at Castle Upton near Belfast. Clotworthy Upton was made a Baron in 1776 and his son was created Viscount Templetown in 1806. In the mid-19th century the second Viscount held an estate in the county Monaghan parishes of Muckno, Clontibret and Ballybay. In 1878, this estate amounted to 12,845 acres in county Monaghan and 10,239 acres in county Antrim.
