Barrett-Lennard
This family descend from Thomas Barrett-Lennard (1761-1857), created a baronet in 1801, the illegitimate son of Thomas Barrett-Lennard, 17th Baron Dacre. Church lands in the Clones area were granted to Sir Henry Duke in the late 16th century. Sir Henry’s great granddaughter, Anne Loftus, married Richard Lennard who took the additional name of Barrett when he was left a property in Essex by Sir Edward Barrett. Their grandson Richard Barrett-Lennard married Anne, Baroness Dacre and they were the parents of the 17th Baron Dacre. The Barrett-Lennard county Monaghan estate was mainly located in the parish of Clones but also in the parishes of Aghabog and Killeevan. The family were absentee and lived at Belhus, Aveley, Essex. The estate was run by agents such as William Mayne and Nicholas Ellis. In 1876, the Barrett-Lennard Irish estate was comprised of 7,920 acres.
