Hatchell

John Hatchell was the son of John Hatchell, a hatter of Wexford and his wife Agnes Mackenzie of County Tyrone. John Hatchell, senior, was killed on Wexford Bridge in 1798 and his son John was brought up by his uncle Alexander Mackenzie (died 1844), a prominent brewer of Donaghmore House, Dungannon, County Tyrone. John Hatchell came to own a brewery in Monaghan town. He was involved in the affairs of the parish of Tyholland from at least 1832 as he is mentioned in the minutes of vestry meetings. He died in 1851 aged 66 and there is a memorial to him in St Sillian's Church, Tyholland. By his first wife Maria, daughter of the Rev Samuel Maffet, he had a child Frances Maria Isabella (1839-1901) who held an estate of seven townlands in the parish of Tehallan in the mid-19th century. She married William Wallace Henderson who died in 1893 aged 58, (plaque in St Patrick’s Church, Monaghan). In 1876, Mrs Henderson of Bessmount owned 749 acres in county Monaghan while her husband owned 262 acres.
