Swanzy (Rockfield)
The various branches of this family descend from Henry Swanzy (1666-1742), an ensign in the army of William III who settled at Avelreagh, Clontibret, co. Monaghan. A descendant Andrew Swanzy of Carrickaderry, county Monaghan, died in 1862 aged 92. In 1790, Andrew married Elizabeth Drope and had three sons and one daughter. His only daughter, Eliza, married Humphrey Jones and died in 1861 at Carrickaderry. The Cavan Observer, 13 April 1861, records her death. Another descendant, Henry Swanzy (1774-1843) of Rockfield, had four sons, the eldest the Rev Henry Swanzy ministered in county Cork for most of his life while his sister Anne occupied Rockfield and died there in 1889. Their brother Hugh Swanzy lived at Connaberry or Castleblayney House and another brother John in Dublin. The Swanzys held land in the parish of Clontibret. In 1876, Hugh Swanzy of Castleblayney owned 500 acres in county Monaghan and 545 acres in county Cavan. At the same time John Swanzy of Dublin owned 330 acres in county Cavan. The Cavan estate of the Swanzys was in the parishes of Denn and Annagh.
