Waddell

A family from Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, who settled in the Ballybay area of county Monaghan in the 18th century. James Waddell (1771-1843) was the son of Alexander Waddell and his wife Maryanne Armstrong. He married Susanna Hopes and had a number of children, including William Charles Waddell, land agent to his uncle Charles Hopes. Family members held two townlands in the parish of Tullycorbet in the mid-19th century. In 1876, the Waddells had two homes in the townland of Lisnaveane, Lisnaveane House and Cloverhill. They owned 1,103 acres in total. In 1906, the two buildings were valued at £16 and £15.
