Devereux (Earl of Essex)

In 1576, Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex, was granted the barony of Farney in county Monaghan, but it was the 3rd Earl who erected Carrickmacross Castle circa 1630. When he died in 1646 his estate was inherited by his sisters and their heirs the Thynne and Shirley families.
