Bunbury

A family originally from Chester who were established in county Carlow in the 17th century. In 1773, William Bunbury of Lisnevagh and Moyle, county Carlow, married Katherine daughter of Redmond Kane of Swords, county Dublin. Redmond Kane, who died in 1778, had acquired leases from the Bishop of Clogher for lands mainly in counties Tyrone and Monaghan. William and Katherine Bunbury had three children. In 1792, their daughter Jane married John McClintock of Drumcar, county Louth. Their second son Kane succeeded his brother Thomas in 1846 and died unmarried in 1874 (see Carlow Sentinel, 14 Nov 1874 for obituary). His successor was his grandnephew Thomas Kane McClintock Bunbury, who became 2nd Baron Rathdonnell on the death of his uncle in 1879. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation Kane Bunbury held an estate in the parishes of Errigal Trough, Drumsnat and Killeevan. His estate in county Monaghan amounted to 1,226 acre in 1876.
