Dr Stearne's Charities
John Stearne, Bishop of Clogher, 1717-1745, was a prominent churchman of his day and a friend of Jonathan Swift’s. He died unmarried and various charities benefited from his will, including Trinity College, Dublin, hospitals and St Patrick’s Cathedral. In the mid-19th century the trustees of Dr Stearne’s Charities held land in the parish of Donagh, county Monaghan. In 1878, the estate amounted to 631 acres in county Monaghan and 1,365 acres in county Armagh.
