Ross (Monaghan)

The Ross family came from Scotland and settled in county Monaghan in the early 18th century. Alexander Ross of Creeve of married Elizabeth Mollau and their only child was born posthumously in 1785. James Alexander Ross (1785-1856) of Legnacreeve House, parish of Monaghan, married Elizabeth Goudy and their eldest son, the Reverend Alexander Goudy Ross, was a Presbyterian minister at Markethill, county Armagh. His representatives held land in the parishes of Killeevan and Clontibret in the mid-19th century. Their estate amounted to 447 acres in 1876. Another family member, David Ross of Liscarney is mentioned in a deed of 1816 held in PRONI. He died in 1821 aged 75 and is buried in St Salvadors cemetery, Glaslough. Lieutenant Colonel James Ross was his second son, see http://www.limerickcity.ie/media/08%2008%2040.pdf At the time of Griffith’s Valuation, a David Ross held townlands in the parishes of Donagh, Drumsnat, Tehallan and Clontribret, county Monaghan. In 1851, James Mollan Ross of Liscarney married Jane Buchanan. John Givan, the Irish Liberal politician of Castlecaulfield, county Tyrone, married their daughter Araminta Reid Ross in 1878. In 1877, another daughter Elizabeth Goudy married James Swanzy of Connaberry House, Castleblayney. In 1876, James Mollan Ross of Liscarney, parish of Tehallan, owned 216 acres, while the representatives of David Ross, Legacurry, parish of Donagh, county Monaghan, held 183 acres. Legacurry House is marked on the OS 25 inch map (1908).
