Church Temporalities, Commissioners (Donegal)
In the 1870s the parliamentary report on owners of one acre and upwards recorded the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as the owners of over 21,000 acres in County Donegal. At the time of Griffiths Valuation in the 1850s they were among the principal lessors in the parish of Raphoe, barony of Raphoe North and the parish of Tullyfern, barony of Kilmacrenan. Samuel Marshall, whom local sources suggest died in 1862, leased a number of townlands in the parish of Gartan from the Commissioners at the time of Griffiths Valuation. In 1867 property leased from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in the barony of Kilmacrenan by members of the Kennedy family was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court. This included two mills.
