Hope
The Hope family of Amsterdam were merchants and bankers. In the early 19th century Thomas Hope settled in England at Deepdene, Sussex and in London. He was a patron of writers and artists. In 1806, he married the Hon Louisa Beresford daughter of Lord Decies, who was also Archbishop of Tuam. Their eldest son, Henry Thomas Hope (1808-1862) was a politician and patron of the arts. He inherited the famous Hope diamond from his uncle. In 1853, he bought the Castleblayney estate from the 12th Baron Blayney and renamed the residence there ‘Hope Castle’. He married Anne Adèla Bichat and they had a daughter Henrietta Adèla, who married the 6th Duke of Newcastle in 1861. Their second son Henry Francis Pelham Clinton eventually succeeded to the property. The Hope estate was mainly in the parishes of Muckno and Clontibret but also in the parishes of Drumsnat, Kilmore, Killeevan and Ballybay. In 1876, Mrs Anne A. Hope of Castleblayney owned 11,700 acres in county Monaghan. The family finally left Castleblayney in 1916.
