Sloane/Sloane-Stanley

This family descend from William Sloane and his younger brother Sir Hans Sloane 1st Baronet, born at Killyleagh, county Down in 1660 and from whom Sloane Square, London, takes its name. Sir Hans Sloane was a physician and collector of natural history; much of his collection provided the foundation for the British Museum. One of his daughters Elizabeth married Lord Cadogan and the other Sarah married George Stanley of Paultons, near Romsey, Hampshire. Their son Hans Stanley (1720-1780) left Paultons, subject to the life interest of his two sisters, to Hans Sloane (1739-1827) of South Stoneham, Hampshire, grandson of William Sloane (1651-1728). In the mid-nineteenth century Hans Sloane’s son, William Sloane-Stanley (1780-1860), held four townlands in the parish of Ematris, barony of Dartree, county Monaghan. In 1876, his son William Hans Sloane-Stanley of Paultons, Southampton, owned 1,050 acres in county Monaghan.
