McCullagh (Derryvally)
The M’Cullagh/McCullagh name is associated with the Ballybay locality of county Monaghan. Members of this family were mill owners and farmers. In the mid-19th century Thomas M’Cullagh of Derryvally held lands in the parishes of Aghabog, Tullycorbet and Kilmore while James M’Cullagh of Corfad held land in the parishes of Ballybay and Aghnamullen. Thomas married his cousin Sarah M’Cullagh and had three sons Andrew B., James and Thomas. His daughter Sarah married a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend William Sherlock Whiteside (1860-1916) and lived in California, USA and Victoria, Australia. Thomas was a Justice of the Peace. He made his will in 1874 and died in 1877 (NA Wills and Administrations 1877). In 1876, members of the M’Cullagh family of Drummick, Cofad and Derryvally, Ballybay owned over 800 acres in county Monaghan. Some of their estate was for sale in 1880. Many members of this family emigrated, see http://www.thesilverbowl.com/letters/McCullaghletters.html
