Hamilton (Cornecassa)
In the mid-19th century James Hamilton of Cornecassa (Cornkessagh), county Monaghan, held lands in the parishes of Tedavnet, barony of Monaghan and Clontibret and Aghnamullen, barony of Cremorne. His Monaghan estate was recorded as 7,315 acres in 1876 with a further 500 acres in County Longford. This family settled at Carrivetragh, north of the town of Clones, in county Monaghan in the 17th century. By the late 18th century Sir James Hamilton, Knight, was living at Cornecassa, just west of Monaghan town. Sir James married his cousin Catherine Hamilton and they had a family of twelve children. Their second son, Dacre Hamilton, succeeded his father and died in 1837 and in turn was succeeded by his son James Hamilton, who died in 1877. James Hamilton, whose main estate was based at Cornacassa, County Monaghan, was recorded as the owner of over 500 acres in County Longford in the 1870s. This included property in the parishes of Abbeylara and Granard in the barnony of Granard.
