Richardson (Poplar Vale)

Originally from Norfolk this family came to Ireland during Elizabethan times. Simon Richardson was granted lands in counties Monaghan, Cavan and Tyrone confirmed by patent of Charles II in 1667. His eldest son Henry is recorded at Poplar Vale and when Henry died in 1730 he was succeeded by his nephew Francis Richardson, a Captain of Dragoons. Many male members of succeeding generations were soldiers. In 1845 John Richardson, a veteran of the Peninsular War, inherited the Richardson estate located in the parish of Tehallan, which amounted to 753 acres in 1876. The family seat Poplar Vale was located in the parish of Tedavnet.
