Ellis (Monaghan, Cavan, Westmeath and Wicklow)
The Ellis families of Abbeyfeale, county Limerick and of Sea Park, county Wicklow, both descend from Thomas Ellis who settled in Monaghan in the late 17th century. His grandson Robert married a Leslie of Aghanloo, county Fermanagh and their grandson Robert Leslie Ellis of Bath was the owner of lands in the parishes of Aghnamullen, Errigal Trough, Tedavnet, Drummully and Ballybay, county Monaghan, in the mid-19th century. Robert Leslie Ellis was a mathematician and distinguished scholar at Cambridge. He never married and his estate appears to have reverted to his first cousin Robert Francis Ellis of Sea Park or Magherymore, county Wicklow, who owned 830 acres in county Monaghan in 1876. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation Robert Francis Ellis also held land in the parish of Killashandra, county Cavan. His brother Thomas Ellis of St Austin’s, Gorey, county Wexford, is recorded as the owner of 360 acres in county Cavan in 1876. Robert ‘A’ Ellis held land in the parish of St Feighin’s, county Westmeath, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation (publ. 1854), including Gillardstown. F Ellis owned 1,167 acres in county Westmeath in the mid-1870s. This appears to be Robert Francis Ellis of Sea Park, county Wicklow, died 1899, as his son Lt Col Henry Leslie Ellis’ estate in county Westmeath was being sold in 1912, see Parliamentary Papers, 1909-1982, vol 71, 44.
