Montgomery
The Montgomerys originally from Ayrshire, held properties in counties Cavan and Donegal in the 17th century. Two brothers Alexander and Robert, sons of John Montgomery, were the ancestors of the Montgomerys of Brandrum and Ballyleck, county Monaghan and of Bessmount, close to the town of Monaghan respectively. The descendants of Alexander and his wife Elizabeth Cole of Ballyleck, continued to reside at Ballyleck until Beaulieu, county Louth was inherited through marriage in the late 18th century. The family of Nixon Montgomery descend from Alexander Nixon of Nixon Hall, county Fermanagh and his wife Mary, eldest daughter of Alexander Montgomery of Bessmount, county Monaghan and granddaughter of Robert Montgomery of ‘Anarea’. Their second son Alexander Nixon succeeded to the Bessmount estate, Tehallan, under the will of his maternal grandfather and assumed the additional name of Montgomery. In 1807 he married Eliza daughter of Arthur Stanley of Dublin and they had a family of eleven children. In the mid-19th century Montgomerys held land in the parishes of Aghnamullen and Clontibret, barony of Cremorne and Clones and Drumsnat, barony of Monaghan. Alexander and Eliza’s eldest son Alexander lived at Kilquade House, Delgany, county Wicklow and married Mary Stafford. In 1876 he was the proprietor of an estate of 1,187 acres in county Monaghan. Their second son Arthur Montgomery resided at Crieve House.
