Leslie (Glaslough)

The Leslies of Glaslough descend from John Leslie, a Scotsman, who became Bishop of Clogher in 1661 and bought the Glaslough estate on the northern border of county Monaghan from the Ridgeway trustees in circa 1665. He is reputed to have died at Glaslough in 1671, aged 100. The Leslie family also held estates in Cos Tyrone, Fermanagh, Cavan, Down, Meath and the Pettigo estate, county Donegal. Griffith’s Valuation records the parishes of Donagh (60 townlands) and Errigal Trough (17 townlands) as containing the main part of the county Monaghan estate of Charles Powell Leslie of Glaslough in the mid 19th century with the parishes of Killkeevan, Aghabog, Tehallan, Kilmore, Drumsnat and Aghabog containing smaller parts of the estate. In the mid 19th century his county Cavan estate was located in the parish of Knockbride, barony of Clankee. Charles P. Leslie’s brother, John Leslie, created a baronet in 1876, owned an estate mainly in the parish of Ematris, barony of Dartree but also in the parishes of Donaghmoyne, Aghnamullen, Currin, Kilmore and Tullycorbet. Charles P. Leslie died unmarried in 1871 and his brother Sir John Leslie of Glaslough owned an estate comprised of 13,621 acres in 1876.
