Derry and Raphoe Diocese
In the 1870s the Lord Bishop of Derry and Raphoe was the owner of over 2000 acres in County Donegal. At the time of Griffith’s Valuation, in the 1860s, the See was among the principal proprietors in the parish of Clonmany, barony of Inishowen East. The rental of over 1000 acres in the barony of Banagh, in the ownership of Catherine Donlevy, was offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court in December 1861. Lease particulars indicate the ultimate interest of the Bishop of Raphoe in this property. In 1863 the rental of an estate of over 750 acres, known as the lands of Clonmany, were offered for sale in the Landed Estates Court by members of the Doherty family. The tenure description indicates they were held under a lease from the Lord Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, originally to Wiilliam Doherty.
