Cary [Carey]

The representatives of Anthony Cary were among the principal lessors in the parish of Donagh, barony of Inishowen East, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation, in the 1850s. George Cary of Whitecastle was among the principal lessors in the parish of Moville Upper at the time of Griffiths Valuation. In the 1870s the Landowners' survey notes the representatives of Anthony Carey as the owners of over 1400 acres in County Donegal. Mrs. Carry owned over 4000 acres. Arthur L. Cary, of Castlecary, Moville, owned over 2000 acres in the county while Tristram [Carey]of Ballybrack, Moville, owned over 2800 acres. Local sources suggest that the Carys were originally based in the West Country in England and that their land interest in County Donegal derived from their association with Sir Arthur Chichester.
